Mental Health First Aid

Training Overview

 

At CHILL, we offer Mental Health First Aid training as a part of our Mental Health + Wellness in the workplace programming. This course is designed to improve mental health literacy and support employee's mental wellness.

Mental Health First Aid is an early intervention education program. It consists of 2-hours of self-paced content followed by 5.5 hours of instructor-led training. In a virtual session participants will learn to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This training gives participants the skills needed to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.  

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: 

  • Describe the purpose of Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Mental Health First Aider.

  • Identify the impact of mental health challenges on the well-being of adults in the U.S.

  • Describe the principles of safety and privacy for both the Mental Health First Aider and the person receiving first aid.

  • Explain the 5 steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE).

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact adults.

  • Explain that recovery from a mental health challenge is possible.

  • Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) when a person shows early signs of a mental health challenge.

  • Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) when a person shows worsening signs of a mental health challenge.

  • Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to crisis situations.

  • Evaluate the impact of early intervention on mental health challenges.

  • Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non-crisis situation.

WORKSHOP SPECIFICS

  • Two (2) instructors to facilitate the interactive digital session

  • Max group size of 30 people

  • MHFA certification upon completion of training

  • All attendees will receive access to CHILL Anywhere for 3 months

Workshop Co-Facilitators:

  • Karyn Feeney

    Karyn Feeney is a National Trainer instructing train the trainer courses for MHFA for the National Council for Behavioral Health and a certified Mental Health First-Aid (MHFA) Instructor. Karyn was the first certified MHFA instructor for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

    Karyn became a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer in 2017, acted as a role player for CIT training courses, and has completed numerous additional training topics related to assisting those experiencing mental health challenges. Karyn has participated in the St. Louis West County Opioid Abuse Task Force and provided lectures to students and communities on the crisis. Karyn brings her lived experience as a caregiver for family members who live with mental health challenges.

  • Laura Sage

    A graduate of Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, Laura was the Director at a hedge fund for over a decade. She is also the Co-Founder of the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation which funds innovative breast cancer researchers and their education. Laura is a certified Mental Health First-Aid (MHFA) Instructor.

    Realizing that many professionals were intimidated by or apprehensive to try meditation, she created CHILL, a modern meditation studio in 2017. After the pandemic hit, Laura launched CHILL Anywhere, a customizable app that supports employee wellness through live and on-demand mental wellbeing-inspired classes. The app has grown into an omnichannel platform to provide preventative care and fill gaps in the current mental health services.
